Calculations
To calculate the magnetizing inductance (Lm) and other core-related parameters, you use the core's effective cross-sectional area (Ae), the number of turns (N), the core length (le), and the core's magnetic permeability (
μ)


Impact on Core Performance Ae.
  • Inductance: A larger Ae results in higher inductance for the same number of turns and core material, making it more efficient in storing magnetic energy.
  • Core Losses: Lower Ae can lead to higher flux density for the same current, increasing core losses (hysteresis and eddy currents).
  • Saturation: A core with a larger Ae can handle higher power levels without reaching magnetic saturation, improving performance and reliability
Core Length (le)
  • Definition: The mean magnetic path length through the core. It's the average distance that the magnetic flux travels within the core material.
  • Impact: A longer core length means a larger path for the magnetic flux, which can affect the inductance. It's an integral part of the inductance formula: longer cores generally result in lower inductance for the same number of turns and core area.
Magnetic Permeability (μ)
  • Definition: It's a measure of how easily a material can become magnetized when exposed to an external magnetic field. It combines the permeability of free space (μ0) and the relative permeability (μr) of the material.
  • Formula: μ=μ0×μr
  • Impact: Higher permeability means higher inductance and better magnetic performance. Materials with high permeability can support strong magnetic fields with lower magnetic losses.
Together with Ae, these parameters shape the performance of your magnetic core, influencing inductance, efficiency, and overall magnetic characteristics.
